Journal 10 Nets-T 5

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from the digital edition of Leading and Learning with Technology.

Fingal, D., (November 2010) Leading & Learning with Technology, What Do We Mean When We Say 21st Century Learning?, International Society for Technology in Education., 38(3)

What Do We Mean When We Say 21st Century Learning?

I was atracted to this article because I have always connected 21st century learning to learning about technology; it was interesting to read of others perspective on the meaning of 21st century learning. The article was focused around the differences of two bloggers and what they believe the meaning of 21st century learning is. David Warlick believes 21st century is through experience not just about the tools being used. He believes that 21st century learning is necessary. The next post was written by Richard Kassisseih he believes that technology has absolutely nothing to do with 21st century technology. The article also included some responses to Richards posts from others around the globe. I feel that most of the article was geared toward the point that we need to re-evaluate the environment that we are preparing our learners for. Being tech savvy is a necessity in today's time, and students need to learn these necessities in the classroom.

Question 1- How do teachers benefit by posting blogs and receiving feedback?
I believe that it is important to share your ideas with the world, especially ones that you are passionate about. Posting a blog post about your views towards education gives you a chance to find your voice and make your statements clear and visible. I believe that receiving feedback on your views keeps an educator on their toes, and hopefully that educator always keeps an open mind to learn more or adapt their views.
Question 2- How do students benefit from 21st century learning?
My teaching philosophy is essentialism; therefore I promote 21st century learning in the classroom. That is I recognize that technology needs to be learned in school. By adopting the 21st century learning style, we will be properly preparing our students the essential knowledge and skills to be productive citizens. Students will benefit because when they get out of school they will be able to function in our society, and they will be able to use their acquired skills to get jobs, or apply them to their college courses.

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from the digital edition of Leading and Learning with Technology.

Fry, T. J., Houlton, A. L., Gruis, E. D., (November 2010). Leading & Learning with Technology. I Can See Me: Webcams in the classroom, International Society for Technology in Education, 38(3)

I Can See Me: Webcams in the Classroom
This article focuses on one specific use of webcams in the classroom. They call it the "I Can See Me" principle. The authors explain the procedure of using the webcam. Basically a student reads a passage out of the text into the webcam. Then the student independently reviews the video, then reviews the video with the teacher. The teacher corrects the video and gives the student guidance. The student then re- records the video. The article consisted of testimony claiming that many students have benefited from the use of webcams in this manner and have in fact become better readers.

Question 1- How can English Learners benefit from the use of the "I Can See Me" webcam principle?
I have shadowed a resource specialist before. She goes into classrooms and helps her students read. Many of these students are English Learners. I have noticed that the student are not excited to see her and go to their special reading group. I believe that using the webcams will not only help them to become better readers and English speakers but will excite them. If they are excited about the reading group they will most likely learn more and take more away from their time spent with the specialist.

Question 2- How can teachers incorporate the use of the webcam "I Can See Me" for all their students?
In every classroom I have gone in to they always start their day off with at least two hours of language arts. The students are broken down into reading groups and they complete a certain rotation everyday. The teacher could have the webcam as part of the rotation during reading groups. If the students are at various levels which will most likely be the case then the teacher can have certain groups read certain passages at their level so all the students are improving. I am sure that the webcam "I Can See Me" principle is not just for students whom are struggling.

Journal 8 Nets-T 5

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from the digital edition of Leading and Learning with Technology.

Johnson, D., (November 2010) Leading & Learning with Technology. Taming the Chaos. International Society for Technology in Education. 38(3).

Taming the Chaos

In this article Doug Johnson brings up the fact students will be bringing technology from their home into the classroom. These include cell phones, ipods, ipads, laptops, etc. Johnson points out that many schools have banned the use of these devices, as they see them as a distraction. Johnson claims that their is a solution to taming the distraction that these devices cause in the classroom. The one that I find logical and agree with is setting up ground rules for the use of the devices. It was suggested that the teacher and the students work together to decide when it is appropriate to use the devices. The article was also filled with suggestions on how to incorporate these home devices to enhance learning. My only concern about this article is that it did not address the fact that many students might not be able to afford these devices. This could be an issue in a school that is diverse.

Questions  1- How does a teacher in a diverse classroom address the use of technology devices from home in their classroom?
Doug Johnson pointed out some really good ways that teachers could use to incorporate the use of the students personal devices to enhance their learning in the classroom. I believe that this is a good solution for schools that have mostly students from the same economic background, however what about those schools that have classrooms filled with middle and low socio- economic families. Half of the students in the classroom might not bring their own technology devices into the classroom, so is it fair for them that the other half of the class is able to use these devices in class? I don't believe it is. But I do not believe that banning the devices should be the solution either. So what I would do if I was a teacher in this kind of classroom is let my students know that the devices are only to be used outside and during free time in the classroom, and if they break these rules their will be consequences. I would still incorporate the use of technology in the classroom, but only on equipment that I am able to provide for the entire class.
Question 2- How will the students benefit from being able to use their personal tech devices in the classroom?
There were many benefits listed in the article by Doug Johnson. One that stuck out to me the most is the one about incorporating cell phones. I believe that cell phones are by far the most common device coming into the classroom by the student. The way a student can benefit from the cell phone is being able to save due dates in their phones, and this can keep them organized. Also the use of smart-phones has many apps available to help the student in the classroom. The most appealing to me was the one where a student can use their phone to record a lecture and then they can upload it to the computer where they can re-visit it as many times as they need. If I had the opportunity to do this in college I probably would have had better grades than what I ended up with.

Journal #6 NETS-T 5

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from an online educational magazine.

Journal #6 Change Agent- An interview of Will Richardson

Rebora, Anthony (2010, October 11). Change Agent Retrieved October 29, 2010 from Ed Week http://www.edweek.org

Will Richardson was a high school teacher turned tech expert. Now he is an advocate for technology in the classroom, and an educational technology consultant. He wrote the book “Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms.” He is interviewed by Anthony Rebora. Will Richardson answered questions regarding his stance on technology in the classroom. In summary, Richardson believes that teachers should not fear the culture shift that is going on and embrace it. He believes that teachers should be role models for students, teaching their students how they can use technology to expand their knowledge and use it for their advantage. In his words, “We need to understand this for our kids. We need to help them understand how to process information in digital formats and digital environments”.

I was a little uneasy while reading this article because; I agree with Richardson that teachers have to make a shift, but I’m personally one of those who are intimidated by it. Not being a tech savvy individual is tuff in this day and age. I believe that in the future classrooms will be teaching everything that Richardson has suggested in his interview. I need to get on board ASAP! I wish that I had the opportunity to learn this when I was going through the public school system.

Question 1: How will teachers benefit from having a PLN?

Teachers will be able to search for information from others who maybe have specialized in a topic of their interest. If the teacher is weak in one subject, they may seek out another teacher in their PLN whom is strong in that subject and can give them suggestions. They can search teaching strategies, they can get ideas for bulletin boards, they can share their ideas; the opportunities are endless.

Question 2: How will students benefit from being network literate?
Students who learn how to be network literate in school will be able to carry their knowledge into adulthood. This knowledge will help them get through college, and will impress employers when applying for a job.

Journal #7 My Personal Learning Network NETS-T 5

For this assignment I had to follow 5 people on twitter who were interested in education and posted valuable information that I can utilize and learn from as an aspiring teacher. I also did this with my delicious account. I was required to participate in a twitter chat; I chose #edchat where I joined many of other professional to discuss a topic on education. I also had to join a digital discussion forum; I chose The Educators PLN, where I get to connect with many other educators.

Journal #7- My Personal Learning Network
1. My personal learning network is a tool for professional growth. I am able to use it as a resource for my needs as a student and an aspiring teacher. I am able to find ideas from others who may be experts in a subject that I am unfamiliar with; such a technology in the classroom. The topic discussed in the #edchat that I participated in was: “Is education broken or just outdated”. I found it hard to follow the conversation because so many tweets were coming in so fast. Several people appeared to be having conversations with each other. I learned that many people are negative about our school system. Not many of the tweeters had good things to say about the quality of our education system. I also learned that many believe we are educating our students to be good factory workers. I didn’t tweet but if I did I would have tried to gear the conversation away from bashing the school system and onto how to adjust so we can teach our students in the best possible manner under these current conditions.
2. My personal learning network on Twitter is a group of people I chose to follow, who have the same interest in education as I do. Participating in this PLN gives me the opportunity for further learning. I am able to view data and information posted by my peers in my network, and care share in their wisdom and knowledge.
3. Delicious is a social bookmarking web service that I use for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. I explored tags of my interest to search for people to add to my delicious network. I added these people to my network because I believe that they will bookmark articles and sites that will be useful for me. I tagged a few sites PLN. The sites that I tagged were all education related. They focus on different aspects of education that I personally find to be very important. One site is dedicated to keeping kids moving. It is a great resource for teachers who are looking to incorporate health and physical education into their classroom and curriculum. I tagged a few other sites PLN that have great links to articles about incorporating technology into the classroom. I tagged a site that gave a lesson on teaching tolerance for ADHD and kids with dyslexia. My favorite PLN tag was one that gave feedback to a student teacher on her first day of teaching. I think every student looking to become a teacher should print this out and study it.
4. I joined the The Educators PLN digital discussion forum. I watched a video titled Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy; I was mainly attracted to this video because it was a Prezi, and I had never heard of Bloom’s Taxonomy before. In summary Bloom’s taxonomy was a hierarchical classification of educational objectives that are key the key to understanding the learning process. Benjamin Bloom developed this in 1956. In 2001, Lorin Anderson and David Krathwohl reformed Bloom’s taxonomy because we are teachers to different kinds of students know. The students we are teaching were referred to as “digital natives,” teachers were referred to as “digital immigrants.” The main point is that technology and collaboration is essential for our 21st century students.

Journal #4 Nets-T 5

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from the digital edition of Leading and Learning with Technology.

Journal#4: Computing In The Clouds
Johnson, D. (Dec/Jan 2009-2010). Leading & Learning with Technology, Computing In The Clouds. International Society for Technology in Education, 37(4).
Doug Johnson; the author, started out the article by explaining what cloud computing is. He states: “Cloud computing relies on applications and file storage that reside on a network, a district intranet, or the internet itself.”(Johnson 2009-2010) He wrote about his transition to strictly cloud computing, and called it “living in the cloud”. He listed all the cloud programs he switched to, and explained how he made the switch. He also summed up the pros and cons of cloud computing and gave testimony for why schools should purchase netbooks and utilize cloud computing.
I found this article to be informative and well written. I agree with the author; schools should make the transition to netbooks, and should utilize cloud computing. The staff and children would clearly benefit from this. I had no idea that netbooks were so reasonably priced. I appreciate that Doug listed the programs that he switched to; this makes it easy for people reading to be able to start living in the cloud themselves.
Questions:
Will netbooks and cloud computing make one-to-one laptop programs more realistic for schools?
When I first learned about the laptop programs in journal one, I thought it was a great idea but would clearly be hard for schools to adopt this program for financial reasons. The netbooks are cheaper than a laptop. They are also smaller and weigh less, making it easier for the student to transport it to and from school. If the school makes use of cloud computing, they could cut back on the costs of purchasing programs for the computers, and put the money elsewhere. Another added bonus is for the forgetful kid who can never remember to bring his laptop; it’s not that big of a deal because all his/her work is in the cloud and can be viewed from any computer.
Will cloud computing always be available for free?
No one will be able to know for sure if cloud computing will always be free. However the author in the article states that cloud computing is made possible through advertisements. I don’t for see this changing. Many businesses only advertise online. My only concern is what happens to schools if all the sudden they have to start paying for programs that they have adapted to, that were once free?

Journal #3 Nets-T 5

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from the digital edition of Leading and Learning with Technology.

Journal #3: Bring the World into your Classroom
McDermon, L. (Sep/Oct 2010) Learning & Leading with Technology, Bring the World Into Your Classroom. International Society for Technology in Education.

The title for this article Bring the World into Your Classroom; was appropriate and explains the jest of the whole reading. The author starts out the article by giving examples of ways that technology can enhance the learning experience in the classroom. She goes on to give examples, which supports how students would benefit, and all the possibilities of learning through technology. The author also gives valuable information to the educator on how to get set up to teach through technology and reiterates why it is important for our students to be up to date with 21st century technology.
I found the article to be straight to the point and useful. I appreciate how she gave information on how to get started. Her ideas about videoconferencing were wonderful. I have never heard about the program Read Around the Planet, or Megaconference Jr. These programs are splendid ideas and I’m grateful that they have been brought into our education system and I am hoping that more and more schools catch on soon. This stuff is amazing; I want my daughters to have access to programs and opportunities like these. As a future educator, I decided to print out the article and save for when my turn comes to have a classroom. And then; hopefully I will be able to incorporate some of Linda McDermons suggestions into my classroom.
Questions:
Bringing technology into the classroom is fairly new, and therefore I haven’t heard much about it. I am wondering, if you were to be able to show videos in the classroom for learning purposes, how would you go about getting them approved?
I would assume that you would have to get it approved by your principle, but I am also wondering if schools even allow teachers to use internet videos. I have observed in plenty of elementary classrooms and I have never seen it done. And if the principle approves it; do you have to stop there, or keep going and get the parents permission as well? These are all issues that are unclear to me.
How will the students benefit from learning how to video conference?
Like the author, I also believe that this is the 21st century world and it’s important for students to be exposed to the technology that is around them. By videoconferencing the students have to utilize other technology skills that they end up learning so many skills in one conference. Videoconferencing can expose a student to the possibilities of the web. Think about how often they will probably use this acquired skill in the future for their benefit. They could use it in future education, they could use this skill to help get a career, or they could use it for their own personal benefit.

Journal 2 Nets-T 5

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from the digital edition of Leading and Learning with Technology.

Journal #2: "Join The Flock" and "Enhance Your Twitter Experience"
Ferguson, H., (June/July 2010) Leading & Learning with Technology. Join The flock, Enhance Your Twitter Experience. International Society for Technology in Education, 37(8).

The articles "Join The Flock" and "Enhance Your Twitter Experience" were basically a promotion for Twiiter. H. Ferguson explained her opinions of Twitter, and told her journey to finding Twitter. She gave testimony throughout both articles that professionals would find it in their best interest to join Twitter. Then she goes into detail about how to navigate Twitter and use it to your advantage.
I actually saved the articles because there were some very helpful steps on how to navigate Twitter. I liked how the steps were so easy to understand. I am inspired to start using Twitter as a student to help get me through my credential program. The authors did an excellent job portraying the great potential Twitter has for the professional.

Question 1:
How is Twitter beneficial to teachers?
Twitter is a great place for Teachers to network with other teachers. If a teacher has a question or concern, they can tweet about it and receive help, and pointers. Teachers can always be enhancing their classrooms and learn great ideas from other professionals. Being a regular tweeter is a way to stay involved with your evolving career. Twitter will do nothing but make you a better, more knowledgeable teacher and that makes; a better learning experience for the students.

Question 2:
How can Twitter benefit me as a college student?
First of all I have to admit that since I made my Twitter page, I haven't used it once. I really didn't know what the point was for me to have one. However, our class discussions and these two articles have shown me why a Twitter account is ideal for a college student like myself. I have been inspired to be more active with my Twitter account. Since I have been in the credential program, I have had many questions and concerns about the teaching world. It seems like everyday, I come up with a question I want answered or something that concerns me. A lot of times I get confused about things I am learning in class because I have nothing to relate it to. Twitter gives me the opportunity to Network with teachers and read their advice. It also serves as another search engine for me. I'm sure if I need to research a topic, I will find lots of information on Twitter. Twitter is a place for me to gain knowledge and develop into the teacher I want to become.

School 2.0 Reflection Tool Nets-5

For this assignment, I used the assessment tool School 2.0 to take an assessment on where I stand with the Nets-T standards. After I took the test I reflected on on my results.
NETS-T... Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity:
I chose this specific Nets-t because it is the one that appeals to me the most. Its important to me to learn as much as I can from this NETS-T so that I can inspire my students and model for them that they can use the internet to learn and be creative. The coolest thing I read from my resources was making a Google group. I will definitely incorporate this into my classroom. It's kinda like a class blog. I would encourage the students to make their own personal page, and then use the group to have discussions with me or other students about questions from class. I believe this group would serve as a great resource. For example, I would encourage the students to post questions about homework on the group page, and myself or other students can help answer that question. A group page is a great addition for a classroom, I'm a big fan of this idea.

Journal #1 Nets-T 5

For this assignment I had to read, summarize, analyze, and reflect on an article from the digital edition of Leading and Learning with Technology.

Journal #1: Taking Laptops Schoolwide: A Professional
Green, T., Donavan, L., & Bass, K. (2010). Taking Laptops Schoolwide: A Professional. ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education)

A Professional, was an article about one to one laptop programs. The article focused mainly on research and data from the Fullerton school district where six of their schools participate in the Laptops for Learning Program. The Laptops for Learning Program is explained as a program that integrates technology into the classroom. The researchers of tech found that this was best integrated with a PLC approach; which as stated in the article is: a focus on learning rather than teaching, working collaboratively, and holding one’s self accountable for results. They have found that the best results can be attained when the teachers collaborate and work together to plan lessons on the computer in order to properly progress the student for using the laptop in a higher grade.
I believe the one-to-one laptop program could be very an effective program to enhance the students learning experience and enhance their learning. However, I am spectacle that many schools will not be adopting the program for financial reasons.

Question #1:
Where does the funding for the laptops come from?
Never in the article did it state where the funding for the laptops came from. I’m curious if it is federally funded or if the money comes from the state. I also want to know how the school gets the money. Do they have to petition for it? Or maybe, they get it as a grant. Also, once they get the laptops do they still get funded for the maintenance of the laptops in case some should break, or become damaged?

Question #2:
What benefits does the Laptops for Learning Program have?
From reading the article; I believe that everyone in the school benefits from the program. First off the students are being exposed to basic computer skills, which is completely necessary and practical for todays age. The teachers have other ways to communicate with their students, and more opportunities to incorporate matter into their lesson plan in creative ways. Teachers can also use the laptop as reinforcement for the lesson that were taught in class, without maybe boring the student. Laptops are a way to communicate and save paper which could help administration with their budget. These days anything helps. Instead of learning being completed on printed out worksheets, teachers could have their worksheets completed by students on the computer. Overall, everyone benefits in some way.

Jennifer Kellers Intro Letter Nets-T 4

For this assignment I wrote an introductory letter about myself; modeling appropriate digital citizenship.

Hello all, my name is Jenn. I live happily in Ramona, with my daughters Heidi and Riley. I am twenty four years old. I have lived in Ramona my whole life. The schools I have attended include: Hanson Lane Elementary, Olive Pierce Middle School, Ramona High School, Montecito High School, Palomar College, and now, CSUSM. This is my very first semester at CSUSM, and so far I really enjoy it on campus. I plan on accomplishing my goal of becoming an elementary school teacher here. I have known that I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl, and right now I'm closer than ever, and am looking forward to the next few years of school. Right now I have a wonderful job of teaching ball sports and fitness to preschoolers around north county. I absolutely love my job. I also love sports; right now I am on a softball team and play at sportsplex in Poway. Soccer is my favorite sport. I also love to work out and be physical on a daily basis, it makes me very happy and feel balanced. I'm a super busy person, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I must admit that I'm not very good with technology. I still have a very basic cell phone. The computer intimidates me. In fact, I just bought a really nice printer and tried to set it up all by myself, but I failed miserably. I am so excited to take this course, and am eager to learn all the material. Also, after the first class, I did decide that I wanted to get rid of my PC, and buy a MAC!

The CSUSM/COE mission statement makes me feel proud to be attending the school. I am excited to be a part of a mission to produce thoughtful educators. I am confident that I am in good hands and when I am finished; I will be as prepared as possible.
